If you’re a woman, it doesn’t pay to sleep while your television is still on, according to a new study by the National Institute of Health. The study claims that women who sleep with a television on may have a high risk of gaining weight or even becoming obese. Utilizing a calculation system, along with the data collected from over 43,722 women between the ages of 35 and 74 on their sleep routine, the study believes that it found the main reason for weight gain among women. If this isn’t enough, another study published in Current Biology found that people who are sleep deprived during the week and try to make up for it on the weekends run the risk of gaining weight. It all boils down to sleeping being a major contributor to gaining those unwanted pounds.
Sleeping during the weekend will pack on the pounds
“Our findings suggest that the common behavior of burning the candle during the week ad trying to make up for it on the weekend is not an effective health strategy,” said Kenneth Wright, physiology professor and director of the Sleep and Chronobiology Lab at the University of Colorado. How does sleeping lead to gaining weight, you might ask? The study finally explained that it isn’t so much the sleep itself that causes a person to gain weight…it’s the snacking. That’s right. The participants of the study that was conducted were broken into three groups, and the group that displayed a massive change in weight were the people who slept during the weekend and also ate processed food for a quick convenience. When the participants wanted to catch up on their rest during the weekend, they didn’t necessarily want to take the time to cook healthy meals.
Women who allow the TV to watch them sleep will risk obesity
“Humans are genetically adapted to a natural environment consisting of sunlight during the day and darkness at night,” stated Chandra Jackson, Ph.D., and co-author of the analysis published by the National Institute of Health. “Exposure to artificial light at night may alter hormones and other biological processes in ways that raise the risk of health conditions like obesity,” Jackson continued. The main conclusion from this research was that weight gain for women resulted from artificial light and its affect on the female hormone. Although the study did admit that other factors such as age, race, and socioeconomic status—along with consumed calories and exercise—did play a role in excessive weight, they didn’t rule out the impact of artificial light.
When attempting to lose weight, it is imperative to remember that having a healthy diet, along with sufficient exercise and low levels of stress, are all key to keeping the weight under control. Sleeping without considering these factors will undoubtedly assist in increasing the fat that can become stored in the body. When you maintain balance through exercise and your diet, you will find that your body will always look and feel great…even if you forget to turn off the television.
