Fountain of Youth Unveiled! 5 Probiotics Rewind Aging, Doctors Confirm

As we age, the decline in the diversity and abundance of beneficial bacteria in the gut becomes a natural occurrence. To counteract this and promote overall health, anti-aging probiotics can play a crucial role, according to Jennifer Bourgeois, PharmD, a pharmacy and health expert. Probiotics help prevent harmful bacteria from taking over, supporting digestive health, strengthening the immune system, and reducing inflammation. Additionally, these probiotics can contribute to increased skin elasticity, reduced fine lines, and a radiant complexion, as noted by Paul Charette, a master aesthetician.

Bifidobacterium longum is highlighted by dermatologist Connie Yang, MD, FAAD, for its anti-inflammatory properties. Chronic inflammation, associated with various age-related health issues, can be addressed by this probiotic, promoting overall well-being. A 2023 study further suggested that Bifidobacterium longum might enhance fracture healing outcomes, hinting at potential dietary approaches for accelerated bone repair in older adults.

Lactobacillus reuteri is another noteworthy strain with potential anti-aging effects, particularly in bone and skin health. Studies indicate that Lactobacillus reuteri supplementation may improve calcium absorption, bone density, skin hydration, elasticity, and wound healing. Lauren Thayer, RN at Health Canal, emphasizes the benefits of Lactobacillus gasseri, including its role in reducing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and similar conditions, which are more prevalent in older adults.

Lactobacillus plantarum HY7714 has demonstrated anti-photoaging effects, reducing wrinkle depth and enhancing skin hydration and gloss, as revealed in a 2015 study. Akkermansia muciniphila is also recommended, as it may benefit skin health by promoting intestinal barrier integrity, reducing inflammation, and exerting antioxidant effects. However, more research is needed to fully understand its mechanisms and effectiveness for skin health, as per a 2019 study published in Microbial Biotechnology. Incorporating these probiotics into one’s wellness routine may contribute to a healthier and more youthful aging process.
